Making ATW interpreting work for you and your customers
Work done by interpreters as a whole is predominantly in Access to Work settings. Given the importance of ATW work to your career, income and customers, it’s worth taking a more time to explore this area.
There are two versions of this 2.5 hour online workshop, depending how much experience you have of ATW interpreting.
The first is for early career interpreters and those new to ATW interpreting. In this workshop we will cover:
- What is ATW?
- How is ATW work different from other work and why does that matter? (Contracts, payments and risk).
- How do I work out what I should I charge - budgets, quoting and agreeing fees?
- ATW finances - Invoicing & staying on top of payments.
- Invoicing, and what to include on my invoice (including for cancellations)?
- What do I do if there are problems with payments?
- When and how do I sign claim forms.
- The online claims process?
- An introduction to protecting yourself from potential fraud.
- An intro to the ATW customer claims portal (if time).
- Q&A (if time).
The second for established interpreters with experience of ATW interpreting, and those who have attended the first ATW workshop. This workshop is shaped by the questions and issues that participants raise before the session, however we will cover:
- How is ATW work different from other work and why does that matter? Covered in relation to specific questions asked by participants.
- Benefits and limitations of the ATW customer claims portal.
- How to avoid fraud, protect yourself and report it.
- Ethics, caps (and other restrictions to budgets), charging & cancellations.
- Depending on time and the other questions raised, we may explore from the following areas:
- Deaf labour and how we can (and are allowed) to work with deaf people in recognition of that.
- Conversations it would be useful to have with deaf people, sharing knowledge and discussing issues.
- Maintaining ongoing working relationships with ATW clients. Boundaries, when things go wrong, ATW interpreter non-interpreting time, ATW admin, interpreter booking admin.
